The wedding day is a big day full of emotions, stress and excitement. There is a lot to organize and a lot be taken care of. There are also lots of events happening prior to the wedding such as a bridal shower, wedding shower and bachelor party.

The bachelor party is a tradition that keeps persisting and couples still organize this event. As much as it is fun and games, it takes a great deal of organization, planning and scheduling. Budgeting, as usual, is a very important aspect, not to mention a key one, in regards to how big and lavish the bachelor party will be. In that case, who pays for the bachelor party?

The bachelor party is typically paid for by the groomsmen and nothing is paid by the groom. The only exception is when the party takes place out of town. If the party involves hotels and road fairs, then the groomsmen do not have an obligation to pay these expenses for the groom. The groomsmen spend on average $1,154 (per person) and between $738 and $1,532(per person) if travels and lodgings are required. Very often the pre-wedding festivities are more expensive than the wedding itself.

How Much Should A Bachelor Party Cost Per Person?

A bachelor party can be quite pricey and very often more expensive than the wedding ceremony and the reception together. The price becomes even hire if the groomsmen decide to organise it out of town and hotels and road fairs have to be paid for.

Let’s make a deeper analysis of how much a bachelor party costs per person:

Overall, on average, it costs $1,044 per person to attend a bachelor party. The average price, though, can go up to $1,154 per person in many cases.

The price depends on several factors like the length, the location and the catering. A one-day bachelor party can cost as little as $317 per person, if it is held locally for the attendees and does not involve too many activities and services to pay for.

However, the most common length of a bachelor party is up to 3 days, which in the lowest cases costs between $579 and $773 per person. If anyone has to fly to the destination (which would add one more day to the event for him) can anticipate paying from $1,000 and above. If the party is 5 days or longer, the average price starts from $1,900.

The cheapest way to do a bachelor party is to organise regular dinner and drinks. This will take only one night and a lot less money, if no other activities are planned. Many people, however, still prefer the more fun option with dancing, clubbing, bar crawls and sports activities that may take up to 3 to 5 days.

If you opt for a simpler and easier to organise dinner with drinks, the bachelor party will cost on average $500 per person.

If you go for clubbing, pub crawls, etc. the average cost will be $1,000-$1,200 per person.

Out of town activities will raise the price to $1, 500 per person.

Does The Groom Pay For Anything At The Bachelor Party?

Traditionally, the groom does not pay for anything at his own bachelor party. All expenses and organisational details are handled by the groomsmen led by the Best Man.

Here are some tips to make the process easier:

1. Follow instructions.

The Best Man usually lets the groomsmen all the details of the party well in advance. The details are:

  • Date

  • Time

  • Location

  • Activities

  • Costs

The groomsmen usually split the cost for everything and since you will know the details in advance make a good calculation of your pocket and prepare to split what is due.

2. Plan.

Since weddings are planned at least a year ahead, it is logical to expect that your best buddy will invite you to be a groomsman. If you have financial problems, start saving from Day 1 of the announcement of the engagement to be able to afford the bachelor party. As already mentioned, such a party will most likely cost you around $1,000.

Does The Best Man Pay For Anything?

Yes, he does. It is unreasonable and unrealistic to expect the Best Man to pay for the entire party. The Best Man pays his fare share of the costs like the groomsmen and takes care of most of the organisational and logistical details.

The duties of the Best Man can be summarized like this:

  • The groom’s best friend

  • Knows the groom well and his preferences (what he would like and would not like)

  • Leader of the groomsmen

  • Organises all logistical details

  • Directs the groomsmen on what to do and when

  • Pays his share of the costs

Aside from the bachelor party, the Best Man also:

1. Provides moral support during the ring selection.

2. Shops for the formal wear (his own and the groomsmen’s) and coordinates the purchases.

3. Serves as a counsellor and confidant.

4. Helps the guests at the ceremony and the wedding reception.

5. Stands next to the groom at the ceremony.

6. Signs the marriage licence as a witness.

7. Poses for pictures.

How Long Is The Average Bachelor Party?

A bachelor party can last from one evening to 5-7 days. The average bachelor party for an average wedding lasts between 1 and 2 days.

If decided so and everyone agrees or if the budget does not allow it, a bachelor party can be a dinner with drinks without any additional activities. This is probably the cheapest and shortest option (well, depending on the type of restaurant and number of guests) or at least cheaper than anything involving trips and activities

If any activities are involved like sport events or pub crawls, then the party usually lasts about 2 days. If you are wondering what to do, here are a couple of more unusual ideas:

  • Go hunting

  • Camp

  • Play poker

  • Golf

  • Take a road trip

  • Ski

  • Rent a beach house

  • Fish

  • Skydive

  • Rent a cabin in the woods

  • Take a cruise

  • Take a brewery tour

If you choose a road trip or renting a beach house or a cabin in the woods, prepare at least $1,000 to begin with. The rent itself is one thing but consider expenses for food and drinks and any other activities you may do there, such as sports or clubbing.

The average price for a trip as a bachelor party usually starts at $1500 per person.

If you go for one evening at a restaurant with drinks prepare at least $500 on average per person.

Do You Bring Gifts To A Bachelor Party?

It is not mandatory to bring gifts since the groomsmen pay all expenses and the event is a gift in itself. Of course, the question of gifts can be discussed and all the groomsmen can agree between themselves, if to bring gifts for the groom at the party.

Although not compulsory, gifts are always nice and welcome. The groomsmen can also buy one big gift as a present from all of them to the groom.

Here are some interesting ideas (and funny one that won’t cost a fortune):

  • Marriage survival kit

  • Marriage coupons

  • Gift card to his favourite pub

  • Funny T-shirt

  • Inflatable beer pong table

More classy and elegant options could be:

  • Pocket watch

  • Cuff links

  • High-end tie

  • Shaving kit

  • Bottle of aged whiskey

  • Leather wallet or gloves

Always consult with the Best Man – he knows Best!
